Alchemical Symbolism in Goethe's Faust Part Two
Goethe's Faust part two can in many ways be seen as an alchemical treatise of the attempt to turn base metal of the personality to the gold of spiritual being or "I" that exists within each of us. From the start of part two with the symbolic dawn breaking to the redemption of Faust through the feminine, this is a work which reflects Goethe's early training in alchemical thought and his profound spiritual orientation. Like alchemical paths in ancient Rome and more recent alchemists such as Paracelsus, Goethe's Faust Part Two can be seen as a profound alchemical text of the western alchemical tradition.
